Many people today use Megapixel cameras in their personal life for digital photography while those of us in the security industry are just getting started with this exciting technology. IP or Internet Protocol Cameras work a bit differently than a typical analog surveillance camera. IP Cameras connect and transmit video to a DVR through a network connection.

To understand the difference between what you might see from a traditional analog camera and a newer Megapixel IP camera, we can compare the effective pixels each camera can produce as follows:

  • A standard resolution analog camera with 380TVL produces an image that is 480 X 380 or 182,400 pixels which is roughly only 1/5 of a Megapixel!
  • A high resolution analog camera with 520TVL produces an image that is 480 X 520 or 249,600 pixels which is roughly 1/3 of a Megapixel.
  • A 2 Megapixel camera produces an image that is 1600 X 1200 pixels for an equivalent almost 2 million pixels.

So a 2 Megapixel IP camera can offer up to SIX TIMES more clarity than even a high resolution analog camera. Recently IP technology has become much more affordable and can still offer many of the same features as an analog camera including Infra-Red, Vari-Focal, Vandal-Proof and even Pan/Tilt/Zoom capabilities, but with a significantly clearer, more detailed picture.

As shown here, a Megapixel IP Camera takes a much larger initial picture of an event, thus offering more clarity when reviewing video.

If you currently have a Watcher XL DVR, you can easily add IP cameras to your existing system. Because IP cameras connect to the DVR via a network connection, they do not affect the DVR camera capacity. For example, an XL8 DVR that already has 8 analog cameras on the system can still accommodate an additional 8 IP cameras without making any changes to the DVR itself.

Areas in a typical retail store that may benefit from the additional clarity that an IP camera can offer include register/POS, front door and parking lot areas. For pricing and additional information, feel free to contact Watcher Total Protection @ 877-289-2824.

Have you walked into a retail store lately and glanced up to view your movements on a TV? Public Display Monitors (PDM) are popping up more in retail because of the effectiveness and low implementation cost. Public Display Monitors are a unique way of informing the general public that surveillance systems are in use. There are two parts to a PDM system, a camera and monitor. Typical placement for these monitors are entryways and high risk areas such as power tools in a hardware store.

Public Display Monitors are effective because they remind customers in a subtle way that a surveillance system is in place and working. If a customer notices that they are on camera it will hopefully make them think twice before stealing something.  These monitors have an immediate effect, the activity and movement on the screen helps to attract the customers attention.

Research has shown that using Public Display Monitors can help deter up to 60% of theft. Most surveillance systems are used for an “after the fact” approach, meaning that users go back and review a theft incident after it has occurred. With a Public Display Monitor in place, you have a better chance of  deterring theft from occurring at all.

A Watcher Total Protection, we have two options for Public Display Monitors. We offer a Spot Monitor Kit that includes a 19″ monitor and all the additional parts necessary to use in conjunction with any existing Surveillance System camera. Also, we offer a 21″ monitor that includes a built in high resolution Surveillance Camera.

Installation is simple and as always, our technical support department is always available to assist with questions. Contact Watcher Total Protection @ 877-289-2824  for more information on adding a Public Display Monitor to your existing surveillance system.

In June 2010, B&J Hardware, a Do it Best Member located in Somerset, WI, chose Watcher Total Protection to upgrade their existing Surveillance System.  They installed a new 16 Channel Watcher XL DVR and 6 new cameras to use in conjunction with 10 existing cameras.  We received the following feedback from Lee Rivard at B&J Hardware:

“Sales, Shipping, Equipment and After-Sales Support were all great!”

Thank you Lee and we look forward to continuing to assist you in the protection of your store assets!

In July 2010, Watcher Total Protection  completed installing cameras at McKay’s Food & Drug’s five locations in Maryland. Locations include Charlotte Hall MD, Hollywood MD, Leonardtown MD, Lexington Park MD and California MD.

Outdated, non working equipment was replaced with Watcher XL series Digital Video Recorders and Watcher brand CCTV cameras. At some of the locations existing CCTV equipment was reused with the new Digital Video Recorders. By upgrading the recording equipment at each store, the video is now digitally recorded and can be viewed from the corporate office.

Areas of concern at the Grocery stores were meat coolers, beer / liquor aisles, canned foods, point of sale cash registers, service counters, health and beauty, and OTC drug aisles. Theft is a growing problem for the grocery industry and research has shown that the grocery / convenience industry has higher then average theft.

By adding even a smaller number of cameras to high risk areas, you can help cut down on both employee and customer theft. According to a recent report on theft by the University of Florida, over 47% of theft is attributed to employees. Watcher Total Protection recommends adding additional coverage to receiving docks, outside building coverage, dumpsters and high risk areas. Even by starting with a smaller system, you can begin to lower your stores shrinkage numbers almost immediately and increase employee productivity.

Watcher Total Protection has protected yet another hardware store from theft (5 more to be exact)!

Watcher surveillance systems have been installed in Noble Ace Hardware’s five locations. Locations include Rutland VT, Johnstown NY, South Glens Falls NY, Cobleskill NY, and Watertown NY.

As the systems were being installed a thief was caught before the install was even done! In the Rutland VT location the Watcher Surveillance system had only been installed for less than two days and an employee at that location noticed a “customer” helping himself to some expensive drill bits and saw blades! That’s why I put customer in quotes… After talking to the manager at the location I was told that the coffee and popcorn are free to their customers, but the drill bits and saw blades needed to be paid for.

By using the Watcher XL series DVR in all of the locations, Noble Ace can view any of their locations from the corporate office location.
